Empowering a Healthier World Through Affordable DNA-Based Healthcare

OVERVIEW
GeneTank was founded in 2017 by MIT researchers with a mission to empower communities through their own unique DNA. Focused on the African continent, beginning with Uganda, the team developed an affordable healthcare model that brought genetic testing and free medical screenings to communities with limited or no access to traditional medical services.
Gillybert supported the operational team, helping structure the economy of scale within community healthcare and manage logistics for the ground-level screening program.
THE CHALLENGE
Pharmaceutical companies pay tens of millions of dollars for genetic data from companies like 23andMe to identify causal DNA mutations. However, the technologies used are heavily biased toward European populations. There was no personal genome service or central storehouse for genetic data in Africa.
Up to 3% of relevant genetic studies included African populations, yet patients of African ancestry were more likely to receive inaccurate diagnoses for conditions like hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. Genetic diversity is not a nice-to-have; it is a medical necessity.
GILLYBERT’S APPROACH
GeneTank created a three-stage platform to address this gap:
- Stage 1: Partner with local clinics and doctors to provide free health screenings. Participants completed a 30-question pre-screening survey and contributed saliva samples for DNA testing.
- Stage 2: Select participants for full DNA sequencing based on survey responses, targeting those most likely to yield clinically meaningful data.
- Stage 3: Use a mobile app or SMS to deliver follow-up surveys from pharmaceutical partners, rewarding participants for their responses, creating an economic incentive for community participation.
Gillybert structured the operational framework, built partnerships with local medical service providers, and helped create the economies of scale needed to bring free screenings to remote communities. Doctors were on-site, and samples were collected, sent out, and analyzed for each participant.
OUTCOME & IMPACT
During the engagement, GeneTank attended to over 50,000 members of the community across Uganda. The model proved that affordable, DNA-based healthcare can be delivered at scale in emerging markets without requiring existing infrastructure.
- 50,000+ community members served across Uganda
- Free medical screenings delivered in communities with no prior access
- Genetic data collected for an underrepresented population, advancing global medical equity
- Operational framework built and tested for scalability across the African continent
